SHTA represents Members’ interests with Public Health Officials
An SHTA delegation led by Chairperson Shamita Palit and Secretary Roland Georges met Public Health officials and the Department of Tourism to discuss concerns raised by members.
- Address outdated provisions, contradictions and duplication in the regulations.
- Use risk-based classification appropriate to individual properties, especially small and medium establishments.
- Reduce overlapping inspections, clarify the responsible authority and develop a consistent checklist for health, hygiene, sanitation, food safety, waste and water.
- Recognise the constraints of older establishments through reasonable transition periods.
- Improve consistency across licensing, renewals, expansion and investment processes.
- Protect public health while avoiding disproportionate financial burdens, particularly for smaller businesses.
- Consult the private sector meaningfully before material regulatory changes.
- Develop a digital regulations and communication portal.
SHTA and Public Health agreed to work towards straightforward Setting Up and Operational information sheets tailored to business categories. Public Health first needs to share the existing regulations; a small sub-committee would draft the sheets for wider evaluation and editing. The newsletter describes planned work, not information sheets already published.
